MARIETTA, GA – One of the most recognized faces in lacrosse, Liam Banks, has been inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame for the Class of 2017. Banks becomes the second Thunder LB3 Coach to be inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in their home region (John Zulberti, 2015 Upstate NY HOF). Born and raised in Setauket, New York, Liam was introduced to lacrosse at an early age by his brothers. The rest was history. At Ward Melville High School, Banks was an All-American and shattered the state single-season scoring record during his senior year with 69 goals and 103 assists.
“I am extremely humbled and excited to be welcomed into this incredible fraternity of lacrosse players. Long Island has produced some of the best players in the world and to be welcomed into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame is incredible. Growing up on Long Island I dreamed about being inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse HOF, and this weekend that dream becomes a reality. Thank you to my parents, my family, my coaches and all the people who supported me throughout the years,” said Liam Banks.
As a collegiate player, Banks was a two-time All-American for the Syracuse Orange. He led Syracuse to four consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances and was the Tournament MVP in helping the Orange to the title in 2000. Banks scored six goals in the NCAA title game against Princeton, the most goals in a championship game in program history. In international competition, Banks was a member of the U-19 USA World Team and was recognized as All-World for his performance at the 1999 World University games in Australia. In six games, he led Team USA with 18 goals and 18 assists helping the United States win the gold. Professionally, Banks played five seasons of Major League Lacrosse, compiling 75 goals, 65 assists, 140 points, and 58 groundballs in 52 total games. He ranked in the Top 10 in scoring in the league and was a five-time MVP.
For the past decade, Banks has been influential in growing the sport in the Atlanta area. He was the original promoter in bringing the first professional lacrosse game to Georgia in 2013, as well helping to facilitate the MLL Championship Games being played at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University from 2014 to 2016. As one of Atlanta’s most prominent lacrosse ambassadors, Banks serves as a Partner and President of Lacrosse Operations for Thunder LB3 Lacrosse. Most recently, on January 15th, the Atlanta Blaze named Banks as the third Head Coach in the history of its franchise.
The Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation (LIMLF) will be hosting a Hall of Fame Dinner for this year’s inductees this weekend. Banks will be joined by Joe Baccarella, Matt Danowski, Tom Gill, Scott Hiller, Kimberly Hillier, Kate Breslin McCarthy and Krista Pellizzi McDonough.
